Much of Everett, Massachusetts, agreed. Maddy English was honored when the town’s new middle school was named for her. The school board ran a contest asking students to submit essays detailing who they should name the school after and why. An eighth-grade student of Maddy’s, Tiffani Macarelli, wrote the winning essay. It eloquently sums up Maddy’s role in the revolution in women’s sports:

I believe the new Lewis school should be named the Maddy English School in honor of Maddy English…. First of all, [she] played professional baseball which, at that time, was considered a “man’s sport.” By playing a so-called “man’s” sport, Maddy showed that she had the confidence in herself…. She became a professional third baseman because she practiced hard and was determined to play for the pros…. I believe the school should be named the Maddy English School not only because she shows determination, confidence, and intelligence and is well-rounded, but also because to her, the sky is the limit…. I believe that this attitude and these characteristics are the key to success in life. As you can see Maddy English is not only a role model to sports fans, but to people of all ages and interests. Maddy English shows many great qualities and shows that being a team player is the best kind of person to be in life.20
